La famille des Æschnidés est attribuée à Leach qui écrit dans l’Encyclopédie dirigée par Brewster (1815). Si le nom scientifique s’écrit SH, le nom français utilise l’orthographe SCH. Ce contexte particulier est associé à une décision de l’ICZN. À l’instar de divers auteurs, j’ai splité en 2014 (Deliry 2014) la famille originale, toujours utilisée à l’initial sur la WOL (Paulson & al. [2021]) en Telephlebiidae, Brachytronidae, Gomphomacromiidae et Aeshnidae, réduisant encore le volume de la famille en 2021 en dégageant les Anactidae des Aeshnidae s.str.. Enfin en 2024, un dernier ajustement y ajoute des genres issus des Allopetaliidae.
