Selon Carle (2012), Asahina (1954) établit une super-famille distincte pour cette famille (Epiophlebioidea Asahina, 1954) en raison de l'unicité morphologique d'Epiophlebia superstes. Il s'agit selon Bechly (1998) d'un sens nouveau (sens.nov.) venant suivre les Epiophlebiidae, tout comme c'est le cas pour le même auteur pour Pritykina (1980) et Nel & al. (1993).
