Selon Carle (2012), Asahina (1954) établit une super-famille distincte pour cette famille (Epiophlebioidea Asahina, 1954) en raison de l'unicité morphologique d'Epiophlebia superstes. Il s'agit selon Bechly (1998) d'un sens nouveau (sens.nov.) venant suivre les Epiophlebiidae. Tillyard & Fraser (1940).
