Management of lists with more than three authors : with mentions et al.
Suggested rules - First rule (not in use on the WOL) : replace more than three authors with & al. : First-descriptor & al., date. But I understand that this is technically difficult for the Odonata Central version. This INCZ-accepted option is not applied to either version of the WOL. Second rule : if at least one of the descriptors is in the list of authors of the bibliographic reference, the entry Descriptor(s) in Author(s), date is simplified to Descriptor(s), date. There are numerous cases, the first of which date back to the mid-19th century. I propose the choice in the next exemples.

2025 (18 février)

I noticed in the WOL what I assumed to be a date inconsistency, since the taxa attributed to Sjöstedt have two close dates: 1899 and 1900. However, the corresponding article can be found in a journal dated March 6, 1899, which is the correct date for the taxa concerned (Cover of the Monographie on the Odonates du Cameroun of March 8, 1899 : against).

- Coenagrion glaucum Sjöstedt, 1900 : Pseudagrion glaucum (Sjöstedt, 1900) → correct date : Coenagrion glaucum Sjöstedt, 1899 : Pseudagrion glaucum (Sjöstedt, 1899)
- Hylaeschna Sjöstedt, 1899 [correct date here] [obsolete genus] – Note : the date of Hylaeschna paludis Sjöstedt, 1899 [synonym of Phyllomacromia paula] is correct on the WOL.
- Libellago cameruniensis Sjöstedt, 1899 → correct name : Libellago camerunensis Sjöstedt, 1899, the date is correct on the WOL.
- Libellago glaucifrons Sjöstedt, 1900 → correct date : Libellago glaucifrons Sjöstedt, 1899 [synonym of Chlorocypha cyanifrons]

Pidancet undertook a collection of dragonflies from the Besançon region of France, which has been deposited at the Musée de Poligny (Jura department, France) (David [2020]). Pidancet (1856) adds two taxonyms that seem to have escaped the authors. The photographs in the collection are in line with Pidancet’s (1856) description and account for the following “new” synonymies, for which I agree with Gwénaël David. As this collection is housed in a “rural” museum and contains two types that are new to science (typus), local naturalists are taking steps to safeguard it.
- Aeschna justi Pidancet, 1856 is a synonym of Aeshna juncea.
- Libellula bruandi Pidancet, 1856 is a synonym of Orthetrum brunneum.
Further research shows that Barbiche (1887) agrees with the second synonym. For the first one he wondered as Dommanget (1998) do too, but Martin (1888) with this synonymie, as ourself (G.David et C.Deliry, com.).
Notes : This little-known synonymy was proposed here on the basis of photo examination of the holotype (David [2020], C.Deliry, com. confirmed with G.David, in litt., September 2020). Aeschna justi presented by Pidancet (1856) proves to correspond in my opinion (com., 2020), shared by that of Gwénaël David (in litt.) to Aeshna juncea. The type is in a Franche-Comté collection at Poligny and I plan to work on it. Dommanget (1998) had already spotted this synonymy, but did not give it as certain. In addition, Boudot & al. (1998) quote Barbiche (1887), who thinks it could be correct, and Martin (1888), who considers the association to be correct. Barbiche (1887) points out that the justi is dedicated by Pidancet (1856) to his brother. The main authors of Catalogues sur les Odonates have not dealt with this taxonym. Dommanget (1998) says that the description of Aeshna justi resembles that of Aeshna juncea quite well, while pointing out that it is curious that Pidancet did not use this name, which was well known at the time (Note, however, that at the time the definition of Aeshna juncea was in fact not all that clear (com., February 18, 2025)). Dommanget (op. cit.) has not found an equivalent in catalogs, particularly Bridges' (1994). He proposes synonymy with [?]. This author does not know how best to associate Libellula bruandi with anything other than an Orthetrum, a correspondence not made by authors until now. Boudot & al. (1998) refine Dommanget's (1998) thinking by adding that Barbiche (1887) thinks that the description seems to come very close to Aeshna juncea and Martin (1888) says that it is a species “which can only be the juncea”. As for Libellula bruandi, Barbiche (1887 in Boudot & al. 1998) says it is Orthetrum brunneum. These conclusions are identical to ours, but have escaped the authors.

Question de Dennis Paulson (DP) le 23 juillet 2024 - I was asked about the author(s) of Uropetala carovei, so I found your email (17 janvier 2020), where I had accepted your suggestion that the author was White in Dieffenbach, 1843. But in that paper, there was no holotype designated, so I presume this qualifies it as a nomen nudum, as Bridges (1994) pointed out. So I think it would be good to change the author back to White, 1846, but looking in Bridges, it would seem to be White in Richardson, 1846.
Bridges C.A. 1994 - Catalogue of the family-group, genus-group and species-group names of the Odonata of the world. 3e éd. - Urbana, chez l'Auteur. - ONLINE
Ma réponse du 23 juillet 2024 - But you can be sure that : Uropetala carovei (White in Dieffenbach, 1843) from Petalura carovei White in Dieffenbach, 1843 is the correct version ! It is not a NN as Bridges (1994) said : not a nomen nudum. The « type » would be in British Museum !
The source is : Dieffenbach E. 1843 - Travels in New Zealand, with contributions to the geography, geology, botany and natural history of the country. - Murray, London, vol. 2 : 281-282. - ONLINE
and you can consult online the fact that the book is from Dieffenbach, the date 1843, in a chapter written about White and Doubleday, but the species is joined only with the name of White > The White (in White & Doubleday : not useful) in Dieffenbach (1843) !!!
These informations are correct and verified. The only problem that could arise is that the edition is badly dated.
The « traditional » version with White (1846) is not the first description, White in Richardson (1846)… too ! I had find these paper(s), but they are not in my computer here, in holiday. If you need, I will can find them later.

- Aeschna cyanifrons Hagen, 1861 (→ nomen nudum) (syn. de Coryphaeschna adnexa).
- Aeschna dominicana Hagen, 1861 (→ nomen nudum) (syn. de Rhionaeschna psilus).

- Cordulia richardsoni Hagen, 1861 (→ nomen nudum) → [?]

My goal with TaxonWorks has always been to have a place where someone could look up any name that they run across (valid or otherwise) and see where it currently stands. As a result, I conscioucly have kept nomen nudums in the list. They aren’t labeled as such on the WOL and that is an issue though.

2020 (17 janvier)
Yesterday I made two steps: (1) that of checking the consistency of the main names given on the IUCN Red List and their correct synchronization with the WOL. The IUCN presents 4080 species, of which 3592 are perfectly consistent with those of the WOL, 378 have the same species name but not exactly the same descriptors (errors of dates, parentheses, commas or more complex). Finally 110 species do not synchronize with the WOL and in this case a more precise examination will be necessary.
(2) I also checked the consistency between the WOL and its XLS version for the main / valid names (not for synonyms), and compared these names with my notes. I discovered about thirty cases to correct in a more or less complex way.
Two main difficulties concern the follow-up and the management of the WOL :
(1) the synchronization between the online version and the XLS version. I think that a method of copy-paste of the XLS version on the online HTML page should solve this difficulty.
(2) regular updates and the difficulty to highlight the details of these updates. Several proposals have been made by others to solve this issue. It will be necessary to move forward on this one and find the best solution.
As a first step, I propose to put aside synonyms and concentrate my remarks on the main / valid names of the species. These are propositions...
- We have on the WOL Acanthagrion chicomendesi as a good species but on XLS it is done as synonym of Acanthagrion apicale. The first solution seems correct[4].
- Same thing for Acanthagrion hartei good species on the WOL but synonym of Acanthagrion obsoletum on XLS. The first solution seems correct[5].
- We have simply Anax selysii Förster, 1900. The exact Schegel’s name is Libellula selysii, this is not an exact homonym then the name is not preoccupied. Libellula selysii Schlegel, 1849 is a synonym of Anax guttatus.
- On XLS correct the authors for Argia acridens Garrison & von Ellenrieder, 2018.
- Calopteryx angustipennis (Hagen in Selys, 1853) is correct on the WOL but to complete on XLS version.
- Chlorocypha jejuna (Karsch, 1898) is correct on the WOL but without bracket and coma to add on XLS.
- Stay only with Dasythemis venosa (Burmeister, 1839) / Libellula venosa Burmeister, 1839. As proposed by R.W.Garrison, de Haan could have participed but is not the descriptor.
- Euthore terminalis is correct on the WOL but need a first bracket on XLS version.
- I think that the correct form is van der Weele and not Van der Weele for Indolestes risi / Lestes risi. van is generaly with a minuscule in netherland I think.
- Stay only with Orthetrum pruinosum (Burmeister, 1839) / Libellula pruinosa Burmeister, 1839. Hagenbach should not be the descriptor.
- Palaiargia tydecksjuerging Orr, Kalkman & Richards, 2014 is not perfect on XLS version.
- As other cases we have Procordulia smithii (White in White & Gardiner Butler, 1846) / Cordulia smithii White in White & Gardiner Butler, 1846
- White A. & Gardiner Butler A. 1846 - Zoology of the voyage of the H.M.S. Erebus & Terror. Insects. - London. - ONLINE
- White A. & Gardiner Butler A. 1846 - Zoology of the voyage of the H.M.S. Erebus & Terror. Insects. - London. - ONLINE
- We have as other cases Sympetrum pallipes (Hagen, 1874 in Hayden, 1874) / Diplax pallipes Hagen in Hayden, 1874 [To confirm ?]. We can interpret Hayden as a director of a « journal » and not as the author of a principal work ?

- Uropetala carovei is yet describe in 1843 in [Dieffenbach E. 1843 - Travels in New Zealand, with contributions to the geography, geology, botany and natural history of the country. - Murray, London, vol. 2 : 281-282. - ONLINE
] by White. We have finally Uropetala carovei (White in Dieffenbach, 1843) / Petalura carovei White in Dieffenbach, 1843. - Complete on XLS version Zygonyx luctifera Selys, 1869.
- I think that we need to strike the minor synonym Libellula rufa Müller, 1767 for Aeshna grandis : this is quite right, but this name is done under Libellula quadrifasciata Müller, 1767 as a proposed name for a possible species. This resolve the problem of Rhodothemis rufa (Rambur, 1842) / Libellula rufa Rambur, 1842 which seems without that preoccupied. It is not the case !
- We have Triacanthagyna obscuripennis (Blanchard in d'Orbigny, 1846) / Aeschna obscuripennis Blanchard in d'Orbigny, 1846 as other cases.
- Blanchard C.E. 1846 – Insects. Volume 6. - In : d’Orbigny A.D. – Voy. Amér. Mérid. – Bertrand, Paris, (1837-1843), 6 (2) : 1-222 [Odonates : 217 + pl.28].

- I get further six more cases but I want to study them more, generally problems of dates : Nesoxenia lineage (Selys, 1879), Phyllocycla brasilia Belle 1988, Polythore batesi Selys, 1869, Rhinocypha ogasawarensis Oguma, 1913 (but 3 publications of this name the same year), Sympecma paedisca Brauer in Fedstchenko, 1877 (need perhaps a publication !)[6], Synthemis macrostigma Hagen in Selys, 1871 (I must verify the descriptor first)[7].
No more things...
