Paulson D. 2003 - Comments on the Erythrodiplax connata (Burmeister, 1839) group, with the elevation of E.fusca (Rambur, 1842), E.minuscula (Rambur, 1842) and E.basifusca (Calvert, 1895) to full species (Anisoptera : Libellulidae). - Bull. of American Odonatology, 6 (4) : 101-110. - BiB
Abstract
The Erythrodiplax connata group is revised, based on examination of 855 specimens. Erythrodiplax connata of Borror (1942) is divided into four species: Erythrodiplax connata (Burmeister, 1839), Erytrodiplax fusca (Rambur, 1842), Erythrodiplax minuscula (Rambur, 1842), and Erythrodiplax basifusca (Calvert, 1895). Erythrodiplax fusca and Erythrodiplax minuscula had been previously considered subspecies of Erythrodiplax connata, while Erythrodiplax basifusca is resurrected for northern populations of "Erythrodiplax connata connata." The remaining species of Borror's connata group - Erythrodiplax abjecta (Rambur, 1842), Erythrodiplax atroterminata Ris, 1911, Erythrodiplax cauca Borror, 1942, Erythrodiplax cleopatra Ris, 1911, Erythrodiplax ines Ris, 1911, Erythrodiplax justiniana (Selys, 1857), Erythrodiplax media Borror, 1942, Erythrodiplax melanorubra Borror, 1942, and Erythrodiplax paraguayensis (Förster, 1905) - are considered valid, with the addition of Erythrodiplax bromeliicola Westfall, 2000. A population in the Andes of Argentina is similar to Erythrodiplax fusca but is possibly specifically distinct. Diplax portoricana Kolbe, 1888, is probably a synonym of Erythrodiplax justiniana rather than Erythrodiplax connata, and Diplax fraterna Hagen, 1873, is considered a nomen nudum rather than a synonym of Erythrodiplax connata.
