Étymologie

Ce taxonyme se base sur deux racines : Cerinum et Agrion

• Cerinum - Il s'agit d'un nom latin signifiant de "couleur cire" imputable aux colorations (rouge, orangé, voire jaunâtre) d'aspect cireux des espèces décrites initialement. Notons que même une des espèces originales par sa colorations bleue, Ceriagrion azureum a bien, tout aussi, un aspect cireux (com., [2024]).
• Agrion - Agrion fondé par Fabricius (1775) provient d'un mot grec (ἀγρός : "champs") signifiant "champs"/lieux "sauvages" ce qui correspond selon toute vraisemblance à l'habitude de trouver les Zygoptères qu'ils désignent alors en totalité à vivre dans les "champs" (entendre ici les prés humides, les marais. En effet, les premiers auteurs de l'histoire de l'odonatologie désignent assez régulièrement les champs ou les prairies pour habitats des Odonates, sans donner plus de précisions, ce qui me laisse à penser qu'à l'époque, ils désignaient les lieux humides, marais, prairies humides. Libellula pratense décrit en 1764 par O.F.Müller (pratense : "prés"), en est un très bon exemple étymologique (com. pers. [2024]).
