Abstract
The invasion of Hemianax ephippiger (Burmeister) in Central and Northern Europe 1995 1996 (Anisoptera : Aeshnidae).
In 1995 the most widespread occurrence of the species in Central and Northern Europe was recorded up to now. A total of several hundred individuals was observed at more than 130 localities in the following countries : Ukraine, Poland, Hungary. Czech Republic, Austria, [[Slovénie|Slowenia], Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands, England, Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Latvia. The weather conditions during the observation period suggest that the individuals originated from the southeast of Europe or the adjacent Near East, where they emerged between mid and end of May. First observations were made on 30-V-1995 in Ukraine and Poland and in early June (Austria and Germany). After a period of bad weather, observations in the more westerly parts of Europe were made from the 20th of June onwards until mid of August. Emergence of a second generation was recorded 1995 in Poland, Slowenia, Hungary, Germany and Switzerland. In 1996, 10 records were made in Germany, Switzerland and the Netherlands, most of them near the same sites as in 1995. Aspects of phenology, habitat and behaviour are discussed.
