Cet ouvrage reprend avec la méthode binominale de désignation des espèces un travail rédigé en 1746 par Linnaeus. Il est complété. Par contre l'auteur ne fait aucune référence à son édition 10 du Systema Naturae (Linnaeus 1758) dont il utilise toutefois généralement les noms.
